Extreme erosion by submarine slides

چکیده
Abstract Submarine slides (including slides, slumps, and debris flows) pose major geohazards by triggering tsunami damaging essential submarine infrastructure. Slide volume, a key parameter in hazard assessments, can increase markedly through substrate and/or water entrainment. However, the erosive potential of is uncertain. We quantified slide erosivity determining ratio deposited (Vd) to initially evacuated (Ve) sediment volumes; i.e., that gain volume erosion have Vd/Ve >1. applied this method Gorgon slide, large (500 km3), seismically imaged offshore northwestern Australia, reviewed ratios for 11 other worldwide. Nine > 1 (median value = 2), showing emplaced volumes increased after initial failure. The most currently documented (Vd/Ve 13), possibly reflecting its passage across highly erodible carbonate ooze substrate. Our new approach quantifying important assessments given substrate-flow interactions control speed runout distance. variations also implications infrastructure impact including more robust modeling.

Calculation Submarine Hydrodynamic Coefficient by Hybrid Method
Increase in the accuracy of hydrodynamic coefficient calculation cause to increase in the prediction of vessel maneuvering ability. Different methods of determining hydrodynamic coefficients will be effective in determining the accuracy of coefficients, especially in numerical simulation. In this paper, we do planar motion mechanism (PMM) test, oblique towing test, and rotating arm test simulat...
متن کاملNext Generation Coatings for Erosion-Corrosion Protection Sprayable protection in extreme erosion environments
The erosion-corrosion environments found in fluid conveying components such as pipelines, pumps, agitators and chutes have important implications for both service life and maintenance cost. The destructive synergy wrought when corrosion occurs in combination with erosion can be many times greater than the sum of each mechanism acting in isolation. A factory applied coating, if present, will hav...
متن کاملReducing Uncertainty in Prediction of Dune Erosion during Extreme Conditions
Coastal dunes protect low lying coastal areas against the sea. Extreme waves and water levels during severe storms may cause breaching of the dunes. Consequently, serious damage due to flooding and direct wave attack could occur, resulting in loss of life and property. Proper coastal management implies that reinforcement measures will be taken if the actual safety level does not meet the agreed...
متن کاملLow long-term erosion rates and extreme continental stability documented by ancient (U-Th)/He dates
Zircon and apatite crystals from the western Canadian shield yield (U-Th)/He dates that are the oldest yet reported for terrestrial rocks. Zircon dates from 1.73 to 1.58 Ga are consistent with independent geological and thermochronological constraints, and indicate that the rocks were at temperatures 180 C and crustal depths 7–10 km since ca. 1.7 Ga. Apatite dates from 0.95 to 0.55 Ga suggest r...
متن کاملRelationship between submarine landslides, channel erosion and thrust fault activity in the Nankai Trough, Japan
Following IODP Expedition 333, frontal ramps of submarine landslides were investigated together with a submarine channel-gully system. In this presentation they are shown to reflect thrust-fault activity in the Nankai accretionary wedge, prior to one of the major stages of movement of the large megasplay fault (MSF). Variations in channel bed slope, height and width of channels and gullies indi...
